To wrap, or not to wrap
Ok, so I’m sharing a dilema with you. I’d like to do my little bit for the planet with ‘This is the Sea 3’ and I’d like to make ‘Tthe DVDs using recycled inserts and NOT using any shrink wrap ( cellophane). I think it’s a terrible waste that people just rip off the plastic and throw it away. I don’t like the thought that I’m causing a few thousand bits of plastic to go to landfill. However, I don’t want to put off customers who want a product that they absolutely know is NEW. And some shops or distributors may even insist on it ?
I’d be interested to hear your thoughts.

This is a great opportunity to improve the quality of the DVD packaging. Cover them with the freshly harvested pelt of baby seals.

I’d say no-wrap and to satisfy the retailers how about a small anti-theft sticker across the seam?

I’m agreeing with the above comments, (except for the seal skin one!) Put a sticker on them do assure they haven’t been opened & leave the plastic wrap off. Either way, I can’t wait to see it!

Hi Justine,
A sticker, as mentioned above, is a good idea. Be sure however that a sticker with NON PEELABLE characteristics is used to give the garantee it has nog been opened before. The sticker should or be cut or it must tear to pieces when opened.

if you have seen the packaging for Àn Inconvenient Truth`, you should find out where and how to get it and do the same, it is all 100 percent post-consumer recycled product and is fully recyclable.
it will probably cost a little more, but it`s well worth it!
i know i wouldn`t mind paying a little more to help the environment (and i don`t think any other sea kayaker would either)

I agree with no wrap and a sticker. Nor would I mind paying a couple more dollars if the packaging costs a bit more.

Hi Justine: how about putting the DVD in a recyclable wrapper and just have a sticker on the box that says “Save The Planet, Recycle”. We are reasonable people, we’ll throw it in a recyclable bin. Just a thought. I don’t at all mind the sticker idea either, but as you say, it must give the purchaser reasurance that it’s new. If the sticker can be removed and replaced easily, you run the risk of seeing copies on eBay that are previously viewed but being sold as new. I should think that there must be some form of “breakable” spline or tab on an otherwise traditional DVD plastic box that, once broken, cannot be sold as new again. Maybe Wenley’s links above, I did not click them (dig your site, Wenley. Still go back every couple days and watch that This Is Warren video… it’s realy keen.) CD1
Justine…do what you can to improve the garbage situation. We are human and individually we have out limits. That said my reccomendation would be to try and minimise the waste, if you can reduce the amount of packaging over all then you have made a great contribution and you get full points for effort.
