  • Helping hands, or should that be wrist?

    16 January, Day 5
We are having at least one more day off due to Barry’s swollen wrist, having phoned kayaking Doctor Bob Mark for advice.
Yesterday a kind man from the Navy provided lots of ice for the swelling and we had a chilled out day in the sun.

  • Eventful time off the water

    15 January, Day 4
Barry’s wrist is swollen so we’re having a rest day today – a shame as the sea is very calm. During the night  Barry’s kayak was stolen by a protester against the rise in gas prices. They have blocked the way to the ferry and one of them wanted to put the kayak on a fire.

  • Into the narrows

    14 January, Coordinates 52.27.45, 69.32.83
Great overnight camp by a river with lot of geese and ducks. Set off in calm weather with the possibility of more wind. The tide helped us across the big bay then turned at the start of the narrows, making further progress very slow.
We passed two clusters of small houses and were met by the Navy – by name! A good day’s paddle, clocking up 33 nautical miles and adding ibis to our bird-spotting list.

  • Day 2 paddle

    13 January; Coordinates 52.38.80S, 70.19.85W
Exciting surf today. Paddled 22 nautical miles in 5 hours. Spotted an albatros and again saw lots of other birds.
We’ll probably camp here, sheltered from the gale by an old hut. Going to eat and relax now, having fixed Barry’s broken skeg.
