Last weekend Barry and I paddled in the Scottish islands around Oban. I’ve paddled there a few times before and was reminded what a gorgeous area it is & the snow on the distant peaks made it extra moody. On Saturday we raced 35km around Lismore island which proved good practice for Tierra del Fuego with all seasons in 5 hours! We had a force 5 headwind, flat calm, rain, hail & sunshine – everything but a following sea! Barry now reckons that ‘cyclonic winds’ means that if you are paddling around an island that the wind is always against you! The day was topped off by 4 otter sightings – a couple of them almost within reach of the paddle.
Sunday was a glorious sunny day, although still a day for poggies in the crisp November temperatures! My day was topped off by spending about 10 minutes in the company of acrobatic dolphins. Hopefully this little film clip will put a smile on your face too! Thanks to Rowland Woollven for putting us up for the weekend and letting me point my camera at him and all his kit on Sunday for a new DVD out next year.
This weekend I’m in the Lake District for the UK’s biggest adventure film festival, the Kendal Mountain film Festival. “Rannoch Moor” is showing on Thursday night as part of the ‘wild water night’ and “Dougie Down the Pet” is showing all weekend in the ‘wild water’ and ‘family friendly’ film programmes. Hope to see some of you there.

Last weekend we found a dead blue tit in our workshop which was very sad. He must have been trapped in there for a while but we didn’t hear or see him until it was too late. That same day we were paddling and Barry spotted a starling in the sea. Amazingly this bird was still alive – just. We took it to the nearest beach that was in the sun, tried to warm him up in our hands and then left him in a little bed of dead grass. Who knows whether he survived but I’d like to think so.
