  • Risso’s Dolphins & Bardsey

    Rissos dolphin

On Sunday I combined a bit of a fitness paddle with one of my favourite locations. I took the slender Rapier for it’s second outing to Bardsey island. Setting off from Morfa Nefyn at a good pace on a flat blue sea, I vaguely noticed a wave gently breaking to one side of me — until something made me look closer. I noticed a gigantic fin protrude from the water – followed by another one, and then a third. It was a pod of at least 5 risso’s dolphins – the first ones I’ve seen. They came quite close and took a good look at me. Very cool indeed.

PiggyThe wind and tide helped me to Bardsey in just over 2 and a half  hours, and it wasn’t very rough in the sound so that was a bonus. Once there, I enjoyed catching up with the Porter family & met the latest addition to the island – Piggy!

Bardsey SoundA northerly wind had picked up during my few hours on the island so the way back was more of a slog, taking 3 and a half hours. It was also bumpier – with wind against tide. I arrived back at the beach about 7.30pm feeling pretty tired, but content! Here are the stats.

The French Magazine ‘Canoe & Kayak‘ has published a very colourful article about our trip around “Isla Grande”, Tierra del Fuego. It’s a 10 page article that I wrote, translated into French, illustrated by lots of photos. It’s in the current issue – number 230 -I think it looks great!  The magazine can be bought here. A preview clip of the Tierra Del Fuego video can be seen here.TDF_Frenchmag_p3

I’m excited that the June 2013 edition of ‘Geographical‘ magazine features an article about Barry and my adventure around “Isla Grande”, Tierra Del Fuego. The “Essential Gear” story focuses on the kit we used for the trip – what we chose and why.

It’s a 4 page article – here is the first and last page. For anyone interested, the magazine can be bought through the Geographical website – or you can get a digital subscription. Eventually the article will appear on their website for free!

You can buy the award winning film of “Tierra Del Fuego” for just £4.99 as a download -or as part of “This is the Sea 5″ DVD.
