  • An Upside down view of “This is the Sea 5”

Steve_Gordon_blogI’ve spotted a few more reviews of ‘This is the Sea 5″ on the internet including one from Steve Gordon (shown above). Steve regularly blogs about kayaking in Israel – see his blog here.

Paul Caffyn kindly passed on to me the latest review of “This is the Sea 5” from the KASK newsletter (Kiwi association of Sea Kayakers). The review was written by Aussie paddler Dave Winkworth and he’s not afraid to say what he really thinks! It turns out he’s not a great fan of ‘dirty water’ or volcanoes. He thinks the ‘Islands of Fire’ film which won 2 awards for ‘best sea kayaking film’ is a ‘stocking filler’. But he loves some of the other films!

  • The Emerald Isle on the radar

Ireland_planningWith a bit of luck, in a month’s time, I’ll be in Ireland, taking the first paddle strokes of a 1,000 mile circumnavigation of the beautiful Emerald Isle, pushing off from Dun Leary with Barry Shaw and Roger Chandler.

Roger lives 5 minutes down the road and runs ‘Coastal Spirit‘ a sea kayak guiding and coaching business. He’s a friend who Barry and I have paddled with many times – for a few hours! I’m looking forward to seeing if he’s as easy-going, polite, thorough & hard-working after 40 or 50 days paddling in challenging conditions while being tired, hungry, wet and cold! I’m sure Roger too is wondering what it will be like to paddle with a couple who have probably developed more ‘routines’ than we realise.

That’s all said with a smile & isn’t meant to be negative in any way. Trip dynamics are just one aspect of every journey that will unfold with time – and it’s all part of the adventure.

Over all, I’m excited for the journey; the wild places, the cold salty spray,  the sore muscles, the chatter of birds, stove-cooked pasta that tastes better than a 5star meal, the on-water decisions, the rattle and flap of the tent in stormy weather, the uncertainly of where to land, frothy pints of Guinness, paddling hard to make a safe landing before nightfall;  the flush of living life to the full on my face at the end of every day.

Atlantic Swells, strong winds, fast currents & many cliff sections make this a challenging paddle & we’re starting to gather information to help us do the trip safely and enjoyably. I’ll put some more updates on this blog as we go along & we’ll be posting updates from the trip itself when we get going – hopefully a month today (or as soon afterwards as the weather allows).

  • This is the Sea 5 “could be the best yet”

The folks at Canoe & Kayak UK magazine haven’t wasted any time in watching and reviewing “This is the Sea 5” & they think it ‘could be the best yet’. They enjoyed the “inspiring quality and excellent film and production values” and highlighted the fact that there are 8 films from all over the world. They aren’t the first people to tell me this is their favourite of the series & I’m really pleased it’s being well received.

You can read the CKUK whole review in the latest issue ( #146) which arrived at Cackle TV HQ yesterday. The magazine also features an article by John Willacy about how he prepared for his  UK circumnavigation last year, & a Safety at Sea guide.

You can buy “This is the Sea 5” & many other paddling DVDs at at your local paddling shop or at www.cackletv.com.

  • 19 days, 19 presentations

I’m back home in Wales after a tour that was at once exhausting and exhilarating. Over 19 days away, I gave 19 presentations in 11 different locations! It wasn’t quite quite one every day as I had the luxury of 2 days without presenting (and the day I arrived in Chicago). But at the bigger shows of Canoecopia & Jersey Paddler, I gave 2 or 3 talks within a few hours.

It was great to see familiar faces  – some of whom I see less than once a year. I met people I’ve heard about from mutual friends & folks who inspire me. One of my favourite comments was from a man who said that my films aren’t elitist and they ‘bring people along with me’. If that’s true then that’s a great achievement.

I was struck by what a community the paddlesports industry is – or can be. At the big shows, rival brands tout their wares next-to-each-other, then go for a beer together in the evening. We are all trying to have fun & make a living.  If we can work together to increase excitement for paddlesports then that has to be a good thing for businesses & participants.

I’d like to thank everybody who helped to arrange a presentation – lots of people worked hard to get things organised & to the friends and occasional kind stranger who put me up for the night. Thanks to the following shops for hosting talks – Rutabaga (Canoecopia) – Riverside Kayak Connection, MichiganAlder Creek, Portland (OR)Bay Creek, Rochester (NY) Complete Paddler. TorontoTrailhead, OttawaCanoe Imports, Burlington (VT) – The Kayak Centre (RI) & Jersey Paddler.

Thanks to Shawna & Leon from Body Boat Blade & Melinda Moree for spearheading the Seattle talk which raised well over $1,000 for the Washington Water Trails Association. Big thanks to Rob Avery & Valley Sea Kayaks who kindly paid to hire the magnificent Mountaineers building & Hilleberg – who sponsored me with a great tent and tarp for Tierra Del Fuego. Petra Hilleberg came along and donated 2 of those great tarps to the raffle. Local Olympian Greg Barton, who is featured in the DVD, came and donated a $100 voucher towards any Epic purchase. Kokatat donated a PFD.

I also had some play time, including a fun morning kayaking with Shawna, Leon, Seth & Erik at Deception Pass. And I enjoyed some fresh powder with Cheri & Turner, managing to get some snow time on 3 days, despite only having 1 day off. Thanks to Cheri & Turner and 4 Maine kayak shops for organising a great showing in Falmouth.

Thanks to everyone who came to a presentation – it wouldn’t have been much fun without you! The different crowds of enthusiastic people helped keep me excited about sharing the films, despite all the travelling. Thanks to Mark Morel for 2 Seattle photos & Kelly from Complete Paddler for the photo from his shop. Thanks again to the main sponsors, Kokatat & Valley. Valley Sea Kayaks generously sponsored the tour & paid for my internal flights & rental car.

This Saturday, I’m closer to home – presenting the DVD at Summit to Sea on Anglesey. If you are near by then come along and see some films! 6.30 for 7pm. The presentation will be about 70 minutes, followed by a curry.
