PostHeaderIcon Windy or not?

Day 33, Day 8 from Punta Arenas – Wednesday 22 February

6.05am: We are setting off early as, once again, it is hard to tell how strong the wind is from a sheltered bay in the dark. We’ll see if we can make some progress before it blows too hard.

1.05pm: S54.27.4 W71.58.1 Windy! We spent four and a half hours battling into strong winds until we finally found a place to camp, 8.5 miles away. We were thinking that we probably should have stayed in bed – but are glad we are here now!

Day 32, Day 7 from Punta Arenas – Tuesday 21 February.

8.44am: We are starting out later as it was windy all last night. Ahead of us is a strong headwind with a 3 mile crossing, but with a 35 knott wind due tomorrow we will have a go at the crossing to look for a more sheltered camp.

3.22pm: S54.26.05 W71.51.34  We have moved a mile and a half to a camp spot that is sheltered from the wind. We enjoyed some sunshine for about 10 minutes, which transformed the place – but it is raining again now. Tucking in to yummy pancakes!

Day 31, Day 6 from Punta Arenas – Monday 20 February.

6.16am: It’s a cold and drizzly morning and windier today. We didn’t need to move the tent in the night but Barry was up every 45 minutes until 3am to check the water level.

2.41pm: s54.24.97 w71.50.03. The headwind came and went. The temperature is down to 3 degrees celcius and there is hail on the water. This is summer!  We have found a good camp site this time on a small grassy triangle, above high tide, we hope.

Day 30, Day 5 from Punta Arenas – Sunday 19 February.

6.18am: Back to getting up in the dark as yet another headwind is due to blow up this afternoon. The pressure has been dropping and the trees swaying. It was lovely at first light, though.

1.25pm: The headwind was less than expected and the tide was with us so we made good progress. Camping options are limited. We are on a tiny, uneven patch of grass, worryingly close to the sea.

2.49pm: S54.22.3 W71.26.0,  Isla Amaya. We are camped in a pretty sheltered lagoon between two islands. High tide is about 2am so we’ll need to set our alarm to check the water!
