Heading for the Beagle Channel
Day 7 – Friday 27 January.
7.24 am: We are leaving Buen Suceso at high water. We hope to reach the south west corner and edge round into the Beagle Channel if it is not too windy.
3.05 pm: We have seen hundreds of albatros along this stunning mountainous coast. A strong north westerly wind has made heading west hard work so we have stopped in a pretty bay. We may paddle again later if the wind drops.
7.13 pm: Still at position 54.56.69.W65.35.9. You know the wind hasn’t dropped enough to paddle when the pan lid keeps blowing off! – plus it’s very gusty. We have seen lots of guanaco. There is a 10 mile bay to cross when we get back on the water.
Aiming for Buen Suceso
Day 6 – Thursday 26 January
A bit windy this morning but not too bad. The sea looks calm from our sheltered position here.
We are going to San Diego Cape at slack water and will continue round it if conditions look good. Hoping for ‘Buen Suceso’ – good success – in reaching the bay of that name.
Short day to Bahia Thetis
Day 5 – Wednesday 25 January.
Started at 5.45 am and rounded Cape Vincent one hour after slack water so it wasn’t very rough. We then headed in to wonderful, sheltered Bahia Thetis, where we have set up camp in a hut with a log burner.
We saw a thousand sealions, a cloud of petrels, so many birds along the wonderful rugged coastline. It is great to be here.
Pancake time now!
. . . and later
Day 4 – Tuesday 24 January.
A great day. We made good progress with some help from the tide and quartering offshore wind. We saw loads of sealions, two types of dolphin and condor soaring above us.
The winds were low in the morning and we reached Caleta Policarpo at 2.30 pm, a distance of 58km.
Instead of camping on a nice beach we went up the river looking for old houses. Our advice to anyone else is don’t – three hours later we were back on the first beach! But dry clothes and hot chocolate will fix that!
