8 February, 53.03.29, 68.14.9
We paddled for six hours and Barry had no problem with the wrist today, so we are hopeful for the rest of the trip. It was a good day and we covered 27 nautical miles.
A gusty wind helped us until we reached the low spit where it was offshore and hard work.
We had dolphins for company then stopped in a small dip for shelter, taking in lunch at the Total Oil plant
We have come ashore in a desolate spot and it is cool.

8 February
We had a good evening yesterday, staying at the Armada house. We carried a stranded dolphin back to the sea and ate lamb caught by the men.
Onto the water at high tide now – it’s a bit windy but we have some shelter. Watch our progress live on the map.

Barry and I driving north today back to the border between Chile and Argentina where we stopped kayaking. We will have our kit inspected today and will start kayaking when the weather allows. that might be Wednesday as it is due to be windy until then, but you never know round here!

Barry had a test paddle yesterday for about an hour and felt good to be back in the boat, so we are optimistic about the trip.

Daily updates will be published here on the blog, just underneath the map of our progress. Our position on the map should be updated every hour or so as we paddle so it´s possible to follow our progress if you want to.

PostHeaderIcon Looking ahead!

Yesterday we visited the doctor and got our certificates saying we are in good health to paddle. In the afternoon, we drove down the coast to Cabo San Pablo, over 100km south of Rio Grande. It was a lovely trip, driving the last 45km on a dirt road, through estancias (farms) and countryside with low hills and lots of trees. We saw lots of guanaco, birds of prey, the pretty bandurria ( black-faced Ibis), and crested caracara. Monica spotted a beaver and we saw what may have been a condor soaring over the hills in the distance.

Once we arrived, we walked down to the impressive shipwreck of the Desdemona & explored inside, keeping a close eye on the incoming tide. We also walked up to the Cabo through pretty low trees. On the cape, the trees were all bent to the south east, showing us that we are paddling this coast in the right direction!!

San Pablo is almost the last place with road access on the NE coast. The road continues down the coast for another 40km or so then we will be on our own for about 200km until Bahia Buen Successo on the East coast, where there is an Armada post ! It’s another 100km or so until we reach a road again. We will only attempt this inaccessible section if we are both feeling well, and Barry´s wrist is feeling strong. Thanks to Marcelo and Carlos for the photos.
